Martin is a new convert to Power boating, he bought his first boat a “Ring 21” with a 225 hp outboard engine in 2006, he then swapped it for an ex race catamaran (Hospitality Inns) which had been converted for “Pleasure Use”, fitted with a 300 hp outboard engine in 2007 (can you see where this is going?) it was whilst at Drivers Dry Berthing where the “Cat” was stored that he saw a beautiful “Old” race boat languishing in the corner of the yard with a “For Sale” on her. Rescued from a barn in the New Forest a few years before hand she had undergone a lot of work to the hull and deck in preparation for the Round Britain 08 race but due to a sponsor dropping out her then owner could no longer afford the restoration. That’s when the dream started to become a reality…
Martin, by his own admission is a speed freak, “My first car in 1978 was an old 1959 Singer Gazelle into which with the help of my dad we squeezed a 2lt V6 engine, put chrome sidepipe exhausts on together with Wolfrace wheels dressed in low profile tyres. That was a cool car, but not a Fast Car. So I sold it in 1980 and bought a Mark 2 Ford Cortina Savage, now that was a Fast Car… Next on the car front in 1982 was a new Jaguar V12 XJS. That was a Fast Cool Car (back in 1982)”
The need for speed continued into Go-
Restoring “Double 2 Shirts” has become an obsession for Martin who wont allow this Classic Offshore Racer to rot away into history.
Martin says:
“This year once again, “Double 2 Shirts” will compete in Offshore Racing, she will be competitive, we will enjoy our racing, and “Double 2 Shirts” Will Win”
